Subject: Tennis Sees New Light in Camas
An upcoming Grand Opening on April 26 will celebrate the start of a new indoor tennis facility in Camas, WA. All members of the community are invited to come out and enjoy a day of exhibition matches and fun events.
The owners of Evergreen Tennis Clark and Caryn Vitek developed the facility at 5225 NW 38th Ave. to bring tennis to east Clark County residents. “We wanted to play more tennis and we wanted our kids to learn tennis,” says Caryn, “but having to drive across town for an hour of lessons or play was an exercise in frustration. We started thinking, why aren’t there any options on the east side of town?” Clark and Caryn are hoping their vision will energize kids and adults to take up the sport. “We want players to come back to the sport year round, and we want to create new players.”
“There is a whole different way of exposing kids to this sport,” adds John Heim, Head Pro of the Junior Program. “We offer programs for juniors of any age, skill, and drive.” John joined Evergreen Tennis to build the junior program, which has grown to over 200 junior players in three months. “Juniors are my wheelhouse because they are so relateable to me. It’s about the kids I get to connect with.” John himself excelled as a junior player at Columbia River High School and went on to play on scholarship at the University of Portland, becoming a teaching Pro and coach.
Learning tennis is not just for kids. David Sturdyvin, Head Pro of adult program says, “I really admire people who start athletic endeavors in their 40s, 50s, 60s who have never done it before. Tennis is a game for a lifetime, with social and health benefits. Its never too late to start.” David joined Evergreen Tennis to bring a comprehensive program to adults, offering instructional, social, and competitive options. “Players get a workout and don’t even know it because its so much fun,” adds David.
The Evergreen Tennis facility is hard to miss at 45 feet high and over 200 feet long. The lightweight design allows sunlight through the semi-translucent ceiling, creating an even natural light. “It’s a lot like playing outside, minus the wind and rain” says Clark. At night the facility is lit by low-power indirect LED fixtures. Clark adds, “Once we decided we wanted to do this, we researched the newest technology. Most tennis facilities are over 20 years old, and we knew there had to be some new options available. Using tensile fabric is something I had seen at aircraft facilities and stadiums. It’s really ideal for tennis.” The lightweight design has been used for tennis internationally by Tennis Australia, the Beijing Olympics, and Wimbledon center court, which is covered by a retractable fabric roof that keeps rain out but allows the natural light in.
Players seem to agree, the overall effect is a new experience. Frequent player, Matthew Hilla posted to the Evergreen Tennis Facebook page “Best courts around, if they rented rooms I’d probably move in.”
Evergreen Tennis is open to the public and will hold a Grand Opening Celebration on Sunday, April 26, 2015 from 12-5 PM. See www.evergreentennis.net for more details.
